Hawaii Through the Eyes of Pastel Artist Jayne Kerns
Since her youth, Jayne has dreamt of sharing with others the beauty that surrounds her. On Maui, her introduction to pastels has helped her realize this dream. She delights in focusing her talents on the natural island beauty that fills her eyes, heart and soul--her pastels catching the light, textures, power and peace of the views that captivate her. Blessed and encouraged by a loving, supportive family and a wealth of great art teachers, Jayne has been creative since childhood. She began taking photographs and studying piano early in life. Art, dance and music were always included in her schooling, along with days of voracious reading. Jayne studied art and art history at Western Washington University, and earned her degree at the Art Institute of Seattle. On Maui, she has continued her education under the tutelage of Kit Gentry and Denise Champion. Her creativity blossoms through a multitude of mediums, including acting, singing, and costume and set design. She feels most at home and able to express her love of the islands through pastels, both in the studio and in plein air settings. The company of the Wednesday Plein Air Painters of Maui brings her joy and inspiration, as she joins them in their travels around the island, seeking to catch the sights and moods of this paradise. Jayne has twice attained the honor of having her work selected as part of the prestigious juried exhibit, Art Maui, held annually at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Her work has also been displayed as part of the Hui No'eau Juried Members' Exhibition and Plein Air Juried Exhibit, the annual Lahaina Poster Contest and the Lahaina Arts Society Shoreline Tree Show. Jayne's pastels have also been included in notable Maui fundraising events, such as the Mercedes Championships, the Hui No'eau's Art Affair, and the West Maui Academy fundraiser at the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival. A body of Jayne's current artwork was exhibited as part of a two-woman show at the Art School at Kapalua from July-September 2004. Her work can be found at Village Galleries in The Ritz-Carlton at Kapalua, Village Galleries in Lahaina, 'ano 'ano Gallery in Kahului and Maui Art Gallery in Wailuku. |
